Nestled within the serene and secluded enclave of Hilltop Place in Rye, stands a magnificent property once the country retreat of Andrew Goodman, the former owner of Bergdorf Goodman. A true embodiment of 1920s elegance, this captivating Colonial masterpiece is a harmonious blend of classic charm and modern luxury, in a fully fenced and gated, completely private setting.
The 9,000+ sq ft home, set on a 2.6-acre lot and bordering the prestigious Apawamis Country Club golf course, exudes a vibrancy that defies its 100-year history. The estate underwent a meticulous, to-the-studs renovation and expansion in the late 1990s and has since been thoughtfully reimagined and upgraded by its current owners. Every contemporary convenience has been seamlessly integrated into the space while preserving the original architectural splendor.
The combination of breathtaking formal gardens, a splendid in-ground pool accompanied by a 1,000+ sq ft pool house, an illuminated tennis court, a bocce ball court, expansive lawns, and an 800+ sq ft guest house creates a stunning fusion of heritage and contemporary style. Located less than 30 miles from Manhattan, this extraordinary estate offers a tranquil retreat with unparalleled sophistication.
THE
GARDENS
Extraordinary formal English four-quadrant perennial garden with centerpiece fountain, defined by manicured yew and boxwood hedges and fully fenced, is a work of art with its well-curated continuous seasonal blooms, a magical site adjacent to the expansive pool entertaining area. The garden offers a magnificent profusion of perennial color and variety from May through September. Tulips and nepeta surround the center fountain, while the four quadrants overflow with mature flowering shrubs and plants, including hydrangeas, peonies, daisies, cone flowers, irises, lupines and phlox. A stone pathway leads to a secret garden featuring exceptional magnolia trees and a stone bench for quiet contemplation. Separately, a large, raised bed, fully fenced vegetable garden offers wonderful opportunities for garden-to-table dining.
Expansive grounds offer complete privacy and feature mature trees and shrubs throughout that are regularly pruned and fertilized, including century-old towering beech trees at the front of the Main House and oak tree offering shade for the tennis court. Additional tree species include Kwanzan cherry trees lining the main drive, weeping cherry, dogwood, Japanese maples, including a very special Tamukeyama cutleaf, pear, holly, blue spruce, fir, hemlock, magnolia, hickory, cedar, ash, maple, mulberry, Norway maple, and plum.
SPRING
DAFFODILS, TULIPs AND CHERRY TREES
In March, hundreds of daffodils bloom underneath the cherry trees lining the main driveway. The pear trees in the front lawn also burst into flower. In April, the first of over 1,000 tulips begin to bloom. These Menton and Catherina tulips grace the front courtyard, while other varieties emerge around the fountain in the formal garden and along the back terrace. In early May just as the tulips reach their peak, the Kwanzan cherry trees lining the main entrance explode into bloom.
summer
peonies, hydrangeas and daisies
By early June, the formal garden has come to life. Nearly 30 mature peony bushes overflow with blooms. The purple headed alliums reach for the sky as delicate yellow irises and purple baptisia compliment the overall abundance. As June fades into July, the formal garden is bursting with color and variety. The hydrangeas begin their months long parade of blooms while the first blooms of the daisies and Peter Cottontail achillea grace the garden. Loosetrife offers fuchsia spires as a stunning contrast.
LATE SUMMER
pink cone flowers, black-eyed susans and anemones
In late July into early August, pink cone flowers line the edges of the formal garden offering vibrant color, while attracting a variety of butterflies and hummingbirds. In other areas of the formal garden, August also sees the arrival of black eyed Susans and the first anemones of the season. The prolific pink anemones carry the formal garden through September with gorgeous blooms, while sedum adds some additional late season color.
THE harvest
The current owners first used the vegetable garden to provide fresh produce for themselves and their friends. As the harvests became more and more plentiful, they decided to change course and instead primarily grow produce for a local food bank. The vegetable garden at Nineteen Hilltop has produced hundreds of pounds of weekly harvests during the growing season to help nourish those in need. It has also brought great joy to the current owners.

For those who are not keen vegetable gardeners, the current owners recommend Homefront Farmers, a local company that will plant, weed, and harvest vegetables for homeowners who so desire. Homefront Farmers planted the vegetable garden for the current owners the first season, and helped them learn about, and fall in love with, home vegetable gardening.
